Lahore High Court Orders Ali Zafar’s Defamation Case Against Meesha Shafi to Be Decided Within 30 Days

Lahore :(web News)The Lahore High Court has delivered a significant ruling in the high-profile defamation case filed by singer Ali Zafar against actress and singer Meesha Shafi. In its verdict, the High Court directed the trial court to conclude the case and issue a final decision within 30 days.

Justice Ahmed Nadeem Arshad dismissed Meesha Shafi’s petition, in which she had challenged the trial court’s order restraining her from making statements related to the defamation case until the court reaches its final decision. The High Court also issued a detailed judgment, upholding the trial court’s directive as lawful and justified.

In his verdict, Justice Arshad emphasized that the trial court’s decision to bar statements until the conclusion of the defamation proceedings was both lawful and necessary. The court observed that the judiciary exercises great caution in cases concerning freedom of expression to prevent undue influence on ongoing proceedings.

During the hearing, Meesha Shafi’s legal team argued that injunctions could not be issued in defamation cases. However, the court maintained that it has the authority to restrict public statements until a final verdict is rendered, ensuring that the judicial process is not undermined or prejudiced.

The trial court had originally restrained Meesha Shafi from making any statements on January 24, 2019, in connection with the defamation suit filed by Ali Zafar. In response to that order, she had approached the Lahore High Court seeking relief. The court’s recent ruling has dismissed her plea and reaffirmed the trial court’s decision.

Furthermore, the Lahore High Court instructed the trial court to conclude and decide the defamation case within 30 days, highlighting the importance of timely resolution to prevent prolonged legal uncertainty and public speculation. The court stressed that this directive was essential for the protection of both parties’ rights and for maintaining the integrity of the judicial process.

Following the ruling, both parties’ legal teams have been instructed to complete all required legal procedures within the prescribed timeframe. Legal observers note that the decision may also help reduce misinformation and speculation circulating in the media and among the public, as the court has explicitly prohibited statements on the matter until the case is fully decided.

The ruling marks a significant step toward concluding a case that has attracted considerable media attention and public interest, reflecting the judiciary’s commitment to balancing freedom of expression with the protection of legal rights and reputations.
