RAWALPINDI, May 14, 2026 — A major-ranked officer and four soldiers embraced martyrdom during an area sanitisation operation in Balochistan’s Barkhan district, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Wednesday. At least seven terrorists were also killed during the exchange .

The troops located and engaged a group of terrorists. “During fire exchange seven terrorists of Indian backed Fitna Al Hindustan were sent to hell,” the ISPR said, adding that weapons, ammunition, and explosives were also recovered from them .

“Relentless Counter Terrorism campaign under vision ‘Azm-e-Istehkam’ (as approved by Federal Apex Committee on National Action Plan) by Security Forces and Law Enforcement Agencies of Pakistan will continue at full pace to wipe out menace of foreign sponsored and supported terrorism from the country,” the statement concluded .
Prime Minister’s Tribute
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the officers and personnel of the security forces for carrying out the operation and paid tribute to Major Bhatti and the other soldiers who embraced martyrdom .
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, the premier prayed for the elevation of their ranks and expressed condolences to their families .
“These great sons of the soil set a remarkable example of loyalty while defending the country against terrorists,” the prime minister said. “The Pakistani nation will never forget the immense sacrifices of its martyrs” .
PM Shehbaz added that officers and personnel of the security forces remained engaged day and night in protecting the country. “In the unwavering resolve to defend the homeland, the entire nation, including myself, stands shoulder to shoulder with our brave security forces,” he said .
Terminology: ‘Fitna Al Hindustan’
The ISPR’s statement used the term ‘Fitna Al Hindustan’ to refer to the terrorist group involved in the attack. This is a term used by the state to refer to terrorist groups operating in Balochistan that are allegedly sponsored by hostile intelligence agencies operating from across the eastern border .
The designation is part of Pakistan’s official narrative that terrorism within its borders is externally sponsored, a position the government has consistently articulated at national and international forums .
Azm-e-Istehkam: The Counter-Terrorism Framework
The operation was conducted under the vision of Azm-e-Istehkam, a counter-terrorism campaign approved by the Federal Apex Committee on the National Action Plan. The framework represents a comprehensive approach to eliminating terrorism through coordinated military and law enforcement actions across the country .
The campaign has intensified in recent months, with security forces conducting multiple intelligence-based operations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces, where terrorist groups remain active despite significant territorial losses in previous campaigns .
Context: Balochistan Security Situation
Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest province by land area, has been the site of a low-intensity insurgency for decades. While major cities like Quetta and Gwadar remain relatively secure under heavy military presence, rural and remote districts like Barkhan continue to see periodic clashes between security forces and militant groups .
The province shares borders with Afghanistan and Iran, and Pakistani officials have repeatedly alleged that hostile intelligence agencies use these frontiers to funnel weapons, funding, and fighters into Balochistan to destabilize the country .
What’s Next
The sanitisation operation in the Nosham area of Barkhan district continues, with security forces conducting searches to ensure no other militants remain in the vicinity .
The funeral prayers for the martyred soldiers are expected to be held in their respective hometowns, with full military honors .
The government has not announced any policy changes in response to the attack, but the incident underscores the ongoing security challenges faced by security forces in Balochistan despite significant gains in recent years .
