Overseas Pakistanis sending remittances through banking channels as Pakistan records its highest-ever monthly remittance inflow of $4.3 billion.

Pakistan Records Highest-Ever Monthly Remittances at $4.3 Billion: SBP

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan achieved a historic milestone in May 2026 as overseas Pakistanis sent a record $4.3 billion in workers’ remittances, marking the highest monthly inflow ever recorded in the country’s history, according to data released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP).

The record-breaking inflow highlights the continued confidence of overseas Pakistanis in the national economy and provides significant support to Pakistan’s external sector at a crucial time.

Record Monthly Inflow

According to the SBP, workers’ remittances reached $4.3 billion in May, representing a 20.2% increase compared to April 2026 and a 15.4% rise compared to May 2025.

The central bank described the figure as the largest monthly remittance inflow ever recorded by Pakistan.

The strong growth continues a positive trend seen throughout the current fiscal year, with remittances playing a vital role in strengthening foreign exchange reserves and supporting economic stability.

PM Shehbaz Welcomes Milestone

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed satisfaction over the achievement, describing the record remittance inflow as a reflection of overseas Pakistanis’ trust in the country’s economic direction.

“The trust of overseas Pakistanis in the national economy and their positive contribution are a valuable national asset,” the prime minister said in an official statement.

He noted that the double-digit growth in remittances on both monthly and annual bases was highly encouraging and demonstrated confidence in Pakistan’s ongoing economic reforms.

Government Sees Strong Economic Signal

Finance Minister’s Adviser on Economic Affairs, Khurram Schehzad, called the development a major achievement for Pakistan’s economy.

“Workers’ remittances surged to a record $4.25 billion in May 2026, up more than 20% month-on-month and over 15% year-on-year,” he stated.

Schehzad described the increase as a “powerful vote of confidence” by overseas Pakistanis that is helping strengthen external stability and improve Pakistan’s economic resilience.

FY26 Remittances Set New Record

With one month still remaining in Fiscal Year 2025-26, officials expect total remittances to exceed $41 billion, setting a new annual record for Pakistan.

The projected figure would represent one of the strongest performances in the country’s history and further solidify remittances as one of Pakistan’s most important sources of foreign exchange.

Economic analysts believe continued growth in remittances could help offset pressure on Pakistan’s balance of payments and support exchange rate stability.

Importance of Remittances to Economy

Workers’ remittances contribute approximately 9–10% of Pakistan’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and remain a critical pillar of the national economy.

These inflows help:

  • Support foreign exchange reserves
  • Finance a significant portion of the trade deficit
  • Strengthen banking sector liquidity
  • Boost household consumption
  • Support economic activity across urban and rural areas

Remittances also play a key role in maintaining confidence in Pakistan’s external accounts.

Gulf Region Remains Key Source

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates continue to be Pakistan’s largest remittance sources.

Together, the two Gulf nations contribute more than $11 billion annually, accounting for over one-third of Pakistan’s total remittance inflows.

Millions of Pakistani workers employed in the Gulf region continue to provide substantial support to their families and the broader economy through regular transfers.

Challenges and Future Outlook

The record inflow comes amid concerns about rising geopolitical tensions in the Gulf region and the potential impact of prolonged instability on overseas employment and future remittance flows.

Higher global oil prices and concerns over shipping disruptions through strategic routes such as the Strait of Hormuz have increased uncertainty in international markets.

Despite these challenges, the latest data demonstrates the resilience of Pakistan’s remittance sector and the continued commitment of overseas Pakistanis to supporting the country’s economy.

Positive Signal for Economic Stability

Economists view the record remittance inflow as a positive indicator for Pakistan’s external sector, particularly as the country continues implementing economic reforms under its stabilization programme.

With remittances expected to surpass the $41 billion mark by the end of FY26, policymakers are optimistic that strong overseas inflows will continue to provide crucial support for economic recovery, foreign exchange reserves, and long-term financial stability.
