Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and military officials during a high-level security meeting on protecting mineral projects in Balochistan.

PM Shehbaz Orders Special Mineral Security Corridor in Balochistan

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered the immediate establishment of a dedicated “mineral security corridor” in Balochistan aimed at protecting strategic mining projects and restoring investor confidence amid ongoing security challenges in the province.

The directive was issued during a high-level Provincial Apex Committee meeting held in Quetta under the framework of the National Action Plan (NAP).

The meeting was attended by Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Staff Syed Asim Munir, Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti, senior federal ministers, military officials, and security leadership.

Security Corridor to Protect Mineral Wealth

According to officials, the planned corridor will focus on the Rakhshan division of Balochistan and include:

  • Additional Frontier Corps deployments
  • Highway security checkpoints
  • Advanced surveillance systems
  • Reinforced border posts
  • Enhanced law-enforcement coordination

The federal government says the initiative is designed to ensure security for both domestic and international companies involved in mining and mineral exploration projects.

“Pakistan is blessed with abundant natural resources, especially minerals,” Prime Minister Shehbaz said during the meeting.

“Ensuring a secure environment in Balochistan is essential for maintaining the confidence of local and international companies working on mineral-related projects.”

Strategic Importance of Balochistan’s Minerals

Balochistan is widely considered one of Pakistan’s most resource-rich regions, holding significant reserves of:

  • Copper
  • Gold
  • Lithium
  • Rare earth elements
  • Coal
  • Natural gas

The province has increasingly become central to Pakistan’s economic strategy as the government seeks foreign investment in large-scale mining and infrastructure projects.

However, security concerns, insurgent violence, and attacks on development projects have long complicated investment efforts in the region.

Counter-Terrorism and Development Discussed

During the Apex Committee meeting, officials briefed participants on ongoing counter-terrorism operations and development initiatives across Balochistan.

Prime Minister Shehbaz praised the armed forces and security agencies for their role in combating militancy and maintaining stability.

He specifically commended Field Marshal Asim Munir for leadership during ongoing national security operations.

Focus on Youth Development and Welfare

Officials informed the meeting that several youth-focused welfare and skills development programmes were progressing across the province.

The prime minister reiterated the federal government’s commitment to:

  • Digital skills training
  • Scholarships
  • Vocational education
  • Youth employment initiatives

He said special attention was being given to ensuring young people in Balochistan receive equal opportunities for participation in national development.

Government Highlights Development Progress

Authorities also presented updates on infrastructure and public welfare projects across the province.

According to officials:

  • No new polio case has been reported in Balochistan since November 2024
  • Multiple healthcare facilities have become operational
  • A cancer institute and dialysis centers are functioning
  • Trauma care facilities are expanding

Officials further claimed that 99% of schools across Balochistan remain open and educational activities are continuing uninterrupted.

Solar Energy Initiative Expanded

The government also highlighted a solar energy programme that reportedly benefited more than 15,000 households.

Officials stated the initiative had generated savings of approximately Rs105 billion so far.

Energy and infrastructure development remain key priorities as Pakistan attempts to improve connectivity and economic integration in remote parts of Balochistan.

Shehbaz Visits Command and Staff College

During his Quetta visit, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also addressed faculty members and officers at the Command and Staff College.

In his speech, the prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to defending national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

He praised the professionalism and sacrifices of Pakistan’s armed forces while paying tribute to military personnel killed in operations.

References to Regional Security Challenges

Shehbaz also referred to:

  • “Marka-e-Haq”
  • Operation Ghazab Lil Haq
  • Afghanistan-based militancy
  • Kashmir
  • Palestine

The prime minister stated that Pakistan would continue operations against militant groups while supporting regional peace and stability.

He additionally emphasized the importance of military diplomacy and international cooperation, especially in the presence of foreign military students attending the institution.

Investor Confidence Central to Policy

The mineral security corridor initiative reflects Pakistan’s growing focus on economic security and foreign investment protection.

Officials believe stronger security arrangements around mining zones are necessary to:

  • Attract international investors
  • Protect infrastructure projects
  • Prevent attacks on economic assets
  • Improve long-term provincial stability

Analysts say the move also signals increasing recognition within Islamabad that economic development and security are deeply interconnected in Balochistan.

Analysis: Pakistan Links Security With Economic Expansion in Balochistan

The creation of a dedicated mineral security corridor highlights Pakistan’s evolving strategy toward Balochistan — combining military security with economic development.

Islamabad appears increasingly focused on transforming the province into a major center for mining, energy, and infrastructure investment.

However, persistent security concerns and local grievances remain major challenges.

The emphasis on surveillance systems, FC deployment, and strategic checkpoints suggests authorities view economic projects as critical national assets requiring enhanced protection.

At the same time, the government’s parallel focus on youth welfare, education, and healthcare indicates recognition that long-term stability in Balochistan may ultimately depend on both security measures and inclusive development.

As global demand for strategic minerals grows, Balochistan’s resources could become increasingly important for Pakistan’s economic future — making security around those projects a major national priority.
