Rawalpindi Police Propose Anti-Drone Systems, Tighten Security at Key Sites

RAWALPINDI — Proposals to install anti-drone systems and modern anti-drone guns have been put forward at a meeting of the Regional Coordination Committee in Rawalpindi, as authorities move to tighten security at key installations and Chinese projects.

Senior police officers proposed installing anti-drone systems and guns to ensure the security of sensitive installations, buildings, as well as of Chinese experts and projects. The meeting was convened under the chairmanship of Regional Police Officer (RPO) Rawalpindi, Khalid Hamdani.

Security Audits Ordered

“The Special Branch Rawalpindi has been instructed to conduct a fresh security audit of housing societies, including their staff and security guards. It has [also] been directed to carry out a comprehensive and indiscriminate security audit of all housing societies,” RPO Hamdani said.

SSP Operations Malik Tariq Mehboob, SSP Investigation Nasir Ali, all divisional superintendents of police, and officers and representatives from relevant institutions attended the session.

Focus on Chinese Projects

The security of Chinese projects and locations where Chinese experts work, reside, or frequently visit was also reviewed. To counter emerging security threats, it was suggested that anti-drone systems and anti-drone guns should be installed at such locations, installations, and workplaces of Chinese engineers so that any potential threat can be dealt with promptly.

Employee Verification

“Verification of employees and private security guards of housing societies should also be made mandatory,” Khalid added.

All stakeholders have been instructed to remain vigilant and play an active role in identifying, reporting, and addressing security concerns, regardless of jurisdictional boundaries.

Information Sharing and Record Keeping

The importance of timely information sharing should be recognized as a collective responsibility to ensure security. “All units have been directed to keep the records of Chinese experts and residents updated continuously,” RPO Hamdani said.

The Special Branch has also been tasked with conducting a comprehensive survey to identify potential threats and mitigate them.

Context

The security measures come amid heightened regional tensions and ongoing counterterrorism operations. Chinese nationals and projects have been previously targeted by militant groups in Pakistan, prompting authorities to maintain a high level of vigilance around sites associated with Chinese experts and investments.

The proposed anti-drone systems represent a significant upgrade in security capabilities, addressing a growing threat from unmanned aerial systems that have become increasingly common in regional conflicts.
