KARACHI — The Board of Revenue (BoR) has failed to produce key documents related to the Gul Plaza incident, prompting the Judicial Commission to summon Senior Member BoR, Khalid Haider Shah, in his personal capacity.
According to a summons issued by Judicial Commission Registrar Iqbal Hassan, the commission had written to the BoR on March 10, directing it to submit the required record by March 13. However, the BoR has yet to comply with the directive.
New Deadline and Warning
The commission has now ordered that all relevant record pertaining to Gul Plaza be submitted by March 25, along with a detailed explanation for the failure to implement the earlier orders. It warned that in case of further non-compliance, legal proceedings may be initiated as per law.
Documents Sought
The record sought includes all revenue entries, transfers, and registries related to the property. The BoR has also been directed to submit all notifications, allotments, transfers, and any official orders concerning Gul Plaza.
The commission has additionally asked for maps and any other relevant documentation available with the BoR regarding the plaza.
Background
The Gul Plaza incident, which resulted in multiple fatalities, has been under investigation by the Judicial Commission. Access to property records is considered crucial for determining ownership, occupancy, and compliance with building regulations at the time of the incident.
The failure of the BoR to produce the requested documents has delayed the commission’s work, leading to the latest summons and threat of legal action.
Next Steps
Khalid Haider Shah is expected to appear before the commission with the required documents and explanation by the March 25 deadline. Whether the threat of legal proceedings will prompt compliance remains to be seen.
