Trump Appoints Erika Kirk, Widow of Slain Activist Charlie Kirk, to Air Force Academy Board

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump has appointed Erika Kirk, the widow of assassinated conservative activist Charlie Kirk, to the United States Air Force Academy’s Board of Visitors, marking the second major role she has assumed following her husband’s death .

The appointment, which was quietly added to the board’s official roster earlier this month, places Kirk on the federal advisory panel that oversees the prestigious military academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado . The White House confirmed the decision, with spokeswoman Olivia Wales praising it as the “perfect choice” .

Filling a Legacy

Erika Kirk, 37, fills the seat her late husband briefly occupied before he was fatally shot at age 31 during a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University in September 2025 . Charlie Kirk, the founder of the conservative youth organization, had been appointed by Trump to the board in March 2025 and attended only one meeting before his assassination .

“Erika is the right person to fill Charlie’s place on the board and continue his work of inspiring the next generation of service members,” said Rep. August Pfluger, a Texas Republican and chairman of the board, who confirmed he had advocated for her appointment for months .

This appointment represents the second time Erika Kirk has formally stepped into a role vacated by her late husband. Shortly after his death, she was unanimously elected by Turning Point USA’s board to serve as chair and CEO, a transition the organization said reflected Charlie Kirk’s explicit wishes .

Board Responsibilities and Composition

The Board of Visitors is a federally mandated oversight body that reviews academy operations, including morale, discipline, curriculum, instruction, fiscal affairs, and academic methods . Members periodically visit the academy and report findings and recommendations to both the Secretary of Defense and Congress .

Kirk joins a board composed primarily of federal elected officials, including five U.S. senators and five U.S. representatives . Other presidential appointees include Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), former deputy national security adviser Dina Powell, retired Air Force Col. Doug Nikolai, and Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.), Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Homeland Security .

Background and Qualifications

A Scottsdale, Arizona native, Erika Kirk holds dual undergraduate degrees in political science and international relations from Arizona State University and a Juris Master in American Legal Studies from Liberty University . She is currently pursuing a doctorate in Biblical Studies, also from Liberty University .

Before her husband’s death, she had built her own public profile, winning the Miss Arizona USA pageant in 2012 and hosting a podcast focused on mentoring young conservative women . She also founded a nonprofit organization, Everyday Heroes Like You, in 2006 to highlight community philanthropists .

Her professional background differs notably from several other board members who bring direct military, defense policy, or national security experience. The board includes former Air Force officers, combat pilots, and academy graduates such as Rep. August Pfluger and retired Col. Doug Nikolai . However, congressional and presidential appointees to service academy oversight boards have historically reflected a mix of expertise, politics, and public visibility .

Continued Political Presence

Since her husband’s assassination, Erika Kirk has become increasingly visible in state and national politics . She was honored during Trump’s State of the Union address in February, where the president described Charlie Kirk as “martyred for his beliefs” .

In October 2025, Trump posthumously awarded Charlie Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, in a White House Rose Garden ceremony that coincided with what would have been his 32nd birthday . Erika Kirk accepted the award, tearfully thanking the president for “honoring my husband in such a profound and meaningful way” .

Turning Point USA has reported a surge in interest since Charlie Kirk’s death, with the organization receiving more than 54,000 inquiries from students seeking to start or join chapters . The group’s two primary nonprofit arms collectively reported nearly $100 million in revenue in 2024 .

In her public statements since assuming leadership, Erika Kirk has emphasized continuity with her husband’s vision. “Everything that Turning Point USA built through Charlie’s vision and hard work, we will make 10 times better, through the power of his memory,” she told attendees at his memorial service
