KYIV, March 11, 2026 — Russian and Ukrainian drone strikes killed at least four civilians along front lines Wednesday, officials said, as the war between the neighbors grinds through its fifth year with no diplomatic breakthrough in sight and a widening conflict in the Middle East derailing peace efforts .
Kyiv said Russian drone attacks killed two people and wounded seven others in the eastern city of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, which lies just 30 kilometers (18 miles) from the Russian border . Regional governor Oleg Synegubov said the strike on the Shevchenkivsky district set a civilian enterprise ablaze, with three women and four men hospitalized .
In a separate attack, Russian drones struck a civilian minibus in the southeastern city of Kherson, wounding 20 people, Ukrainian prosecutors said .
On the other side of front lines, Moscow-installed authorities in the occupied part of the southern Zaporizhzhia region said a Ukrainian drone strike killed two civilians in their car in the frontline town of Vasylivka. “The danger of repeated strikes remains,” Kremlin-appointed governor Yevgeny Balitsky warned .
Peace Talks Derailed by Iran War
The continued bloodshed comes as the United States presses both Kyiv and Moscow to agree to an elusive peace deal, but a planned third round of trilateral talks has been derailed by the US-Israeli war on Iran, now in its 12th day .
The UAE, which had hosted previous rounds of negotiations and was slated to hold the next meeting, has itself come under Iranian attack amid the escalating regional conflict, rendering the Abu Dhabi option untenable .
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed this week that “because of the situation around Iran, there are not yet the necessary signals for a trilateral meeting,” though he emphasized Kyiv’s readiness to resume diplomatic work as soon as conditions allow .
Istanbul Emerges as Possible Venue
However, signs of diplomatic movement emerged Wednesday. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters in Moscow that the next round of Russia-Ukraine-US talks may take place in Istanbul .
“Of course, the Istanbul option exists, and all parties have a very positive attitude towards it,” Peskov said, noting that all participants view the Turkish city favorably as a negotiation platform .
The development was confirmed by Zelenskyy, who said Tuesday he spoke with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and that Türkiye was prepared to host the next round in a trilateral format .
Peskov also thanked UAE leadership for their assistance in organizing previous rounds, stating that “circumstances at the moment, unfortunately, do not allow us to consider the Abu Dhabi option” .
Previous Talks and Mediation Efforts
Russia and Ukraine have held multiple rounds of talks over the past year. Three rounds occurred last year in Istanbul, while this year’s US-mediated negotiations have taken place in Abu Dhabi and Geneva .
The most recent round of trilateral talks in Geneva in February addressed a “wider range of issues,” including territorial questions central to Moscow’s demands . US President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff described those talks as having “brought about meaningful progress” .
However, no specific date or venue has been set for the next round. “At the moment, there is no precise detail on the continuation and the next round of negotiations,” Peskov said Wednesday. “As soon as accurate information appears, we will inform you. In general, there is an understanding that the negotiation process will be continued” .
Ukraine Offers Drone Expertise Amid Shifting Focus
As international attention shifts to the Middle East, Zelenskyy has sought to keep Ukraine from falling out of focus. He revealed that several countries, including the United States and Gulf states, have approached Kyiv for expertise in countering Iranian-designed Shahed drones—the same type Russia has launched tens of thousands of against Ukraine .
Zelenskyy said he has spoken recently with leaders of the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait about possible cooperation, but emphasized that any assistance would be provided only if it does not weaken Ukraine’s own defenses .
“We help to defend from war those who help us, Ukraine, bring a just end to the war” with Russia, Zelenskyy said .
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, speaking after a White House visit this week, urged linking the conflicts, arguing that “anyone who fights for security and justice in the Middle East must also want security and justice in Europe” .
War Continues Anew
On the ground, fighting shows no signs of abating. Kharkiv, which was encircled at the beginning of Russia’s invasion four years ago, has been attacked almost daily since Moscow’s forces were pushed back in 2022 . On Saturday alone, two children were among at least 10 people killed in a Russian missile strike on a five-story residential building in the city .
As Bundestag President Julia Klöckner arrived in Kyiv Wednesday for meetings on supporting Ukraine’s energy supplies and air defenses, the fundamental dynamic remained unchanged: four years into the war, civilians continue to die along front lines while diplomats search for a path to peace that remains stubbornly out of reach .
