Pakistan and Afghanistan Confirm China-Mediated Peace Talks in Urumqi After Deadly Border Clashes

Pakistan and Afghanistan Acknowledge Ongoing Peace Negotiations in China

Pakistan and Afghanistan have officially confirmed that they are engaged in peace talks in China, marking a significant diplomatic effort to ease rising tensions between the two neighboring countries.

On Thursday, Afghanistan announced that it had dispatched a delegation to China for formal negotiations with Pakistan. Islamabad also confirmed that talks with the Afghan Taliban administration are currently underway in the Chinese city of Urumqi.

China Steps In as Mediator Amid Rising Tensions

The talks are being held at the initiative of China, which has taken on a mediating role to help broker a lasting ceasefire between the two sides. Beijing’s involvement comes after weeks of escalating violence along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

According to officials, the negotiations aim to de-escalate tensions and restore stability in a region that has recently witnessed deadly clashes.

Deadly Clashes Prompt Urgent Diplomatic Engagement

The peace talks follow a series of recent violent confrontations between Pakistani and Afghan forces, which have resulted in hundreds of casualties. The clashes have also severely disrupted cross-border trade and travel, affecting thousands of people dependent on the busy frontier.

The urgency of the situation has pushed both governments to seek diplomatic solutions, with China emerging as a key facilitator in the process.

Afghan Foreign Ministry Confirms Delegation

Afghan Foreign Ministry spokesperson Abdul Qahar Balkhi confirmed the development in a statement posted on social media platform X. He stated that a mid-level delegation from the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan had arrived in China to engage in formal talks with the Pakistani side.

The statement emphasized that the initiative was undertaken at the request of the People’s Republic of China.

Pakistan Confirms Talks, Stresses Responsibility on Kabul

Pakistan’s Foreign Office also confirmed the ongoing negotiations on Thursday. Spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said discussions are in progress but highlighted that the success of the talks largely depends on Afghanistan’s actions.

He stressed that Kabul must take concrete and verifiable steps to prevent militant groups from using Afghan territory to carry out attacks against Pakistan.

“The responsibility for meaningful progress lies with Afghanistan, which must demonstrate clear and verifiable action against terrorist groups operating from its soil,” Andrabi said.

First Round of Talks Held in Urumqi

Confirmation of the talks comes a day after officials from both countries told the Associated Press that their representatives had arrived in Urumqi, a major city in northwestern China, where the first round of negotiations has already taken place.

However, details regarding the composition of the delegations from both sides remain unclear, and neither government has disclosed the names of the participants.

Regional Stability Hinges on Dialogue

Analysts believe the outcome of these talks could play a crucial role in determining the future of Pakistan-Afghanistan relations. Continued instability along the border poses risks not only to regional security but also to economic connectivity initiatives, including China’s Belt and Road projects.

China’s involvement underscores its growing diplomatic influence in South Asia, particularly in conflict resolution and regional stability efforts.

The confirmation of peace talks between Pakistan and Afghanistan in China represents a critical step toward de-escalation after weeks of deadly conflict. With Beijing acting as mediator, the international community will be closely watching whether these negotiations can lead to a sustainable ceasefire and improved bilateral relations.
