TOLEDO, OHIO: At least 12 people were injured after two gunmen exchanged fire near a popular community festival in Toledo, Ohio, on Saturday evening, prompting a major police investigation and renewed concerns over gun violence in the United States.
Authorities said the shooting occurred near the annual Old West End Festival, one of Toledo’s largest cultural events, which was attended by several hundred people at the time of the incident.
Victims Range from Teenagers to Older Adults
According to Toledo Police, the victims range in age from 14 to 61 years old.
Two of the injured remain in critical condition, while the remaining victims are receiving treatment at local hospitals.
Officials said officers responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 5:37 p.m. local time after multiple emergency calls reported people had been shot near the festival grounds.
Police Say Gunmen Exchanged Fire
Investigators believe the violence began when two individuals opened fire on each other in a crowded area, causing multiple bystanders to be struck by bullets.
“This is one of the worst scenes I’ve encountered,” Toledo Police Lieutenant Dan Gerken told reporters during a press conference.
Police have not yet identified the suspects and said the investigation remains highly active.
Deputy Chief Joseph Heffernan confirmed that authorities are pursuing several leads and reviewing evidence collected from the scene.
“We do have some evidence, and we’re following up on multiple leads,” Heffernan said.
Authorities Seek Public Assistance
Law enforcement officials are urging witnesses to come forward with information, videos, or photographs that may help identify those responsible.
George Kral, Toledo’s Director of Public Safety, appealed directly to members of the public who may have recorded footage on their mobile phones during the incident.
“I know there is information out there. Please help us help you,” Kral said.
Investigators are currently reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing numerous witnesses who were present at the festival.
Festival Marred by Violence
The Old West End Festival is regarded as one of Toledo’s most iconic annual events, attracting visitors from across the region.
Several hundred attendees were participating in festival activities when the gunfire erupted.
Officials expressed disappointment that an event intended to celebrate community culture and heritage was overshadowed by violence.
“This is one of the most iconic festivals in Toledo, and it’s a shame that something like this had to ruin it,” Kral said.
Gun Violence Remains Major Concern
The shooting adds to a growing number of mass shooting incidents reported across the United States this year.
According to data compiled by the Gun Violence Archive, at least 171 mass shootings have occurred nationwide in 2026, excluding the Toledo incident.
The organization defines a mass shooting as an event in which four or more people are injured or killed by gunfire, excluding the shooter.
The continued rise in such incidents has fueled ongoing national debates regarding gun control, public safety, and law enforcement strategies.
Investigation Continues
Police have increased patrols in the area and are asking residents to remain vigilant while the search for the suspects continues.
Authorities have not yet announced any arrests and have urged anyone with information to contact law enforcement immediately.
Officials say additional updates will be provided as the investigation progresses and more details become available.
The incident remains under active investigation.
