RAHIM YAR KHAN — Chairperson of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), Senator Rubina Khalid, visited Sheikh Zayed Hospital on Tuesday to inquire after women injured in a tragic incident a day earlier, announcing financial assistance for the affected families and promising strict legal action against those responsible.
During the visit, Khalid met with the injured women, checked on their condition, and directed hospital authorities to ensure the provision of the best possible medical facilities and full support to the victims. Member of Provincial Assembly Sardar Habibur Rehman, the hospital’s Medical Superintendent, and other BISP officials accompanied the chairperson.
Investigation Underway
Speaking to media after the visit, Senator Khalid said a comprehensive investigation into the incident was underway and that strict legal action would be taken against those found responsible. She did not provide specific details about the nature of the incident but emphasized the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
The chairperson also addressed the mechanism of stipend disbursement under BISP, noting that payments are made through partner banks. In this case, she said, notice had been issued to the concerned bank over alleged negligence, and a penalty had been imposed.
Financial Compensation Announced
Khalid announced that the families of the deceased women would receive Rs1 million each as financial assistance. The injured women would be provided Rs300,000 each to support their recovery and help cover medical expenses.
The announcement brings immediate relief to families affected by the tragedy, though the chairperson stressed that the assistance was separate from any legal accountability that would follow the investigation.
Ongoing Commitment
The visit underscores BISP’s commitment to staying connected with beneficiaries and responding to crises affecting vulnerable populations. As Pakistan’s largest social safety net program, BISP provides regular cash transfers to millions of women across the country, making incidents affecting beneficiaries a matter of direct institutional concern.
Khalid’s presence at the hospital and her directive for thorough investigation signal the program’s intention to address not only the immediate needs of affected families but also the systemic issues that may have contributed to the incident.
