Star WR Mike Evans Leaving Buccaneers to Sign with 49ers on 3-Year, $60.4M Deal

Tampa Bay/Santa Clara – In a seismic shift in the NFL landscape, star wide receiver Mike Evans is ending his legendary 12-year tenure with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to sign a three-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The deal is worth up to $60.4 million and signals Evans’ intent to chase a second Super Bowl ring with a new contender.

‘A New Challenge’

The Buccaneers made a desperate bid to keep their franchise icon, but Evans was driven by a desire for change. His agent, Deryk Gilmore, released a statement clarifying the decision.

“The Buccaneers made it clear they would have loved for Mike to finish his career in Tampa and potentially become just the fourth player in franchise history to spend his entire career as a Buccaneer,” Gilmore said. “Mike Evans’ decision to leave Tampa was never about money. The Buccaneers were extremely aggressive in their pursuit and presented a very strong offer… In the end, this decision simply came down to Mike wanting a new challenge and a fresh opportunity while he still feels he has a great deal left to give the game.”

The Buccaneers responded with a gracious statement, acknowledging Evans’ legendary status. “Saying goodbye to a legend such as Mike Evans is never easy, but today we are filled with appreciation and gratitude for all that he did during his extraordinary 12-year career,” the team said.

A Legacy in Tampa

Drafted seventh overall in 2014, Evans became the franchise’s all-time leading scorer with 662 points. His 11 consecutive seasons with 1,000 receiving yards ties him with Hall of Famer Jerry Rice for the most in NFL history—a record he was chasing when a broken collarbone interrupted his 2025 season.

Evans is one of just ten players in league history with at least 13,000 receiving yards and 100 receiving touchdowns. His 108 touchdowns and 13,052 yards are the most among active receivers who had spent their entire career with one team.

Fit in San Francisco

The 49ers are getting a proven deep-ball threat and red-zone weapon. Evans, 32, was meticulous in his decision, evaluating the quarterback situation, offensive coordinator, and his potential role to find the best chance to compete for another Super Bowl.

He joins a 49ers team looking to bolster their receiving corps and make a deep playoff run.
