LAHORE – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday visited Jati Umra, in keeping with a long-held Sharif family tradition, where he met PML-N President and his elder brother, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, as well as his niece, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. During the meeting, the prime minister briefed the elder Sharif on the overall situation of the country, sharing details regarding the evolving situation in the Middle East and Pakistan’s efforts aimed at promoting peace in the region.
The prime minister took Nawaz Sharif into confidence on global oil prices and the government’s measures to provide relief to the public. Both leaders also discussed the prevailing political situation in the country.
Symbolic Briefings
It is pertinent to mention that the former prime minister has largely remained on the sidelines vis-a-vis matters of the central government, and has instead been more active in the affairs of the Punjab government, where his daughter, Maryam Nawaz, serves as chief minister. These briefings, having no bearing on day-to-day decision-making at the centre, appear largely symbolic in nature.
PSL 11 Final Attendance
Later in the day, the prime minister attended the PSL 11 final at Gaddafi Stadium, where he met both teams, Peshawar Zalmi and Hyderabad Kingsmen. Upon arrival, he was received by PCB chairman and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. The prime minister watched the match and later met players from both teams individually.
Analysis: Family Traditions and Political Symbolism
The prime minister’s visit to Jati Umra continues a long-held Sharif family tradition of consultation between the brothers. While Nawaz Sharif is no longer in government, he remains the party’s president and an influential figure within the PML-N.
The briefing on the Middle East situation and oil prices is significant. Pakistan has played a central role in mediating between the US and Iran, and the ceasefire remains fragile. Global oil prices have a direct impact on Pakistan’s economy.
However, the briefings appear largely symbolic. Nawaz Sharif has largely remained on the sidelines of central government affairs, focusing instead on Punjab where his daughter is chief minister.
The prime minister’s attendance at the PSL final reflects the growing importance of cricket diplomacy. The PSL has become a major national event, and the prime minister’s presence underscores the government’s support for sports.
